Project 1: Still Life

Write a short story or a poem and create an Impressionist still-life composition to visualize your story. Use various lighting fixtures to light your still-life setting and create a sequence of lighting moments that depict your concept. Emphasis is placed on the properties of light and lighting design approaches.

Project 2: Key Light

Use a mannequin’s head if possible or ask a friend to model for you to experiment with a key light.

Project 3: Film Noir

This project explores concepts of using lights to create a mood in a space based on Film Noir techniques. The lighting must convey the following moods: Ghostly, Threatening, and Mysterious.

Project 4: Lighting to Music

Composers and musicians use music to tell stories and so are lighting designers! Like lighting, music can be used to depict characters, places, actions, and emotions. Music and lights are often used to heighten a mood or to express a thought or feeling when mere words are not enough. Select 2 to 3 minutes of music that you find inspiring (No lyrics). Your objective is to create virtual lighting effects that complement and reflects the mood and emotions of your music.

Project 5: Dance

Photograph the piece that you designed the for the Dance Concert and create a digital poster. The poster should be eye-catching and evocative! It must include images of your work, your name, title, date, and title of the piece. It must look professional as it was made for a professional venue advertising this event!

Lighting II Journal

Lighting Journal: Observations

Each week record at least one observation about the lighting that you see around you. i.e., outdoor sunny day, cloudy or rainy day, on the buildings, indoor natural and artificial lights, stage lighting, film, TV, etc. Indicate the light source, time, effect, and as many of the Properties and qualities of light as possible. Record how the light affected the object, how it made you feel, what it reminded you of, and how you might use it in a theatrical setting. Photograph the scenes.
